No Dive Shop Owners Were Harmed While Filming This! 💥

This is one of those stories you have to see to believe. About five weeks after I purchased Amigos Dive Center, I got a crash course in why high-pressure equipment demands your full respect — every single time.

What Happened

It was February, nearly 11 PM, and temperatures outside had dropped into the 20s (°F) — roughly -6 to -1°C. I was near the end of refilling the bank and had just walked back from where I store the empty O₂ bottles. When I looked over at the Haskel booster pump, I noticed it had stopped cycling.

So I reached up and turned off the drive gas valve… and well, the rest is history.

I believe the sudden drop in temperature caused an O-ring failure in the first or second stage. What followed was an explosion that sent shrapnel flying from the booster pump. A piece of debris struck the headband of my hearing protection hard enough to snap it in two — which is why you’ll see me rubbing my head in the video. Fortunately, I walked away with nothing more than a small bump and a scratch.

I also have to give credit to my wife’s four-second response time to the explosion. She was surprised to find me still standing and largely unharmed.

The Aftermath

The explosion required replacing three tank valves and the Haskel booster pump itself. The original destroyed booster is now proudly on display at the shop, right next to its replacement — a reminder to everyone who walks in of what high-pressure equipment can do when things go wrong.

What Is a Haskel Booster Pump?

A Haskel is a gas-driven pressure booster used in dive fill operations to transfer and compress gas at extremely high pressures. They are essential equipment at fill stations like ours at Amigos Dive Center in Cave Country. When components fail under that kind of pressure — as you can see — the results are dramatic.

A Reminder About Safety

While the video is certainly dramatic (and yes, a little entertaining after the fact), safety is never a joke. This incident reinforces why proper equipment maintenance, regular inspections, and strict safety protocols are non-negotiable when working with high-pressure diving equipment. Cold weather adds another variable that can cause unexpected failures, and this is a perfect example.
